I was seven months pregnant when my husband and I moved to Berlin. We were there for work reasons – his, not mine. My main job was to find a gynecologist, pick a hospital to give birth at and rent an apartment suitable for a young couple with a baby. While I worked on figuring out our future, however, Berlin was forcing me to confront my past. I had been apprehensive about moving there. Having grown up in Ukraine and Russia, I had been taught to resent the German capital for launching World War II.

Your Presence Is Mandatory begins at a Red Army outpost on June 22, 1941, at the start of the German invasion of the USSR, and concludes in war-torn Donetsk, Ukraine, in August 2015, at the outset of another war. In an especially powerful scene tucked into this debut novel, 12-year-old Masha is playing cards with Yefim Shulman, her war veteran grandfather. They are playing durak, a popular game among people of Russian culture.

If one word could sum up Sasha Vasilyuk’s debut novel, Your Presence Is Mandatory, it might be “distressing.” This is, after all, a story set in Eastern Europe from 1941 to 2015, and in it, the horrors of World War II and its aftermath in the Soviet Union are neither romanticized nor softened. At the heart of the story is a lie. It’s 1941. Nazi Germany has declared war on the Soviet Union and bombed Kyiv.

En enero de 2022, estaba planeando un viaje de verano a Ucrania y Rusia para mi hijo de cuatro años y para mí.
