As 71 of the total 87 witnesses — including the victim’s son — turned hostile, the Supreme Court acquitted six men accused of killing a man in Karnataka in 2011. “With a heavy heart for the unsolved crime, but with absolutely no misgivings on the issue of lack of evidence, against the accused arrayed, we acquit the accused, reversing the judgment of the high court and restoring that of the trial court,” a Bench of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice K Vinod Chandran said on Friday.

In an apparent reference to the ongoing India-Pakistan military conflict, the Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre not to release from service Short Service Commission women Army officers challenging denial of permanent commission to them as it would bring their morale down. "In the prevailing situation, let’s not bring their morale down. They are brilliant officers; you can use their services somewhere else. This is not the time that they (should) be asked to roam around in the Supreme Court.
