As we celebrate Women's Equality Day, on Aug. 26, Afghanistan sits in stark contrast to much progress elsewhere in the world. It's clear that the country is going backward and that the prospects for equality for Afghan women and girls dim with each passing day. Two years have passed since the Taliban's takeover, and their rule has been devastating to Afghan women, pushing them further into the shadows of oppression.

We believe that war crimes, crimes against humanity and potentially genocide are currently being deliberately perpetrated in Sudan. We urge all of those committed to the collective responsibility to protect people from these crimes to listen to populations whose lives are immediately in jeopardy, raise the alarm, force the international spotlight on the crisis and demand a protective wedge between those at risk and the men with guns.

For the disarmament agenda to progress, its machinery needs to be revisited. Current efforts by the Conference on Disarmament - the United Nations body tasked with negotiating treaties on weapons control - have stalled for almost 30 years because agreement requires consensus and a lack of political will is fed by geopolitical rivalries among member states.

The coup in Niger in late July sent shockwaves in West Africa and far beyond. Besides enormous consequences from the crisis in the region, it could also have a "negative impact" on the current withdrawal of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali ( Minusma), the UN said. One route for the UN to remove its equipment and personnel is through the north into Niger rather than going through central Mali to Côte d'Ivoire.

The United States and 90 other countries took a formal stand against weaponizing food in conflicts last week, while more than half - 102 United Nations member states - declined to sign the communiqué pledging to condemn the use of food as a tool of war. Only 11 of Africa's 54 countries agreed to the messaging.
