I know we’re not supposed to play favourites, but October is the best! After a sweaty and uncertain September, we should finally get crisp fall weather perfect for pumpkin pie (and pumpkin spice lattes, who are we kidding?) It’s a month of starting to live life to the fullest again by (safely) gathering with family and friends to celebrate the bounty of the season.

Recently my youngest son and I donned our woolly wear–toques included–and spent a blustery morning at an apple orchard, collecting fruit for the coming weeks. Some pieces will be used for snacking, while others will be turned into tarts and folded into blondies (laced with bourbon and pecans, I might add) for our Thanksgiving feast. We’re hosting 24 people on Sunday, and serving turkey with the usual trimmings.

Yes, I know I “deserve the purse.” Maybe I just didn’t want it. Maybe that mother decided she didn’t need it, not because she can’t afford it, but because she already has too many purses and her closet is out of control. Maybe putting myself first is putting myself last. The judgement is coming from inside the house. The “She Deserved the Purse” trend has now been hijacked and commodified, turning what was meant to be a meaningful act into something shallow and commercial.

When determining your family’s answer to this question, you will need to go back to the foundation—your own family values. Why does one apologize? When we feel remorseful for our behaviour, we find the courage to ask for forgiveness. This can be a difficult process and is most effective when it comes from within. If we make our kids say sorry ‘in the moment,’ we are not teaching, we are forcing them and potentially entering a power-struggle.

It usually comes as a shock to people that most liver disease in Canada and the US is caused by nutrition and obesity and not by alcohol abuse. The liver of a 10-year-old overweight child who has not been fed optimal nutrition can be just as damaged as that of a 60-year-old alcoholic. Both conditions can lead to cirrhosis and potentially cancer. In fact, liver cancer is one of the very few cancers still on the increase. Why? Because people don’t know about the problem.

We are frequently reminded that marriage is work. Hard work. The baby and toddler years? Brutal. Kids are school-aged? Busy. (And brutal). Teens? Brutal. Sooo brutal. So why in the world is the divorce rate rising for “grey divorce” in Canada? By the time you’re 50, the hard work of parenting should be waning.
