The cash-free payment ratio for consumption reached nearly 40 per cent in 2023, a big improvement from 13 per cent in 2010. But Japan remains one of the world’s few cash-centric economies.

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) may find it cannot avoid further hawkish actions at its upcoming June 13-14 meeting. The March change to monetary policy triggered further yen depreciation, breaking through the 160-yen-per-U.S.-dollar level at the end of April and leading to $61.6 billion in foreign-exchange interventions by the Ministry of Finance.
