I am a horticulturist who works at a zoo. And this is often terribly humbling. Although the zoo where I work is also a botanical garden, and a damned good one (great plant collection, a beautiful tree canopy, colorful gardens, research, community work, conservation and an Arbnet level IV accreditation), whenever I’m out and about in public wearing my zoo shirt I know full well what is going to happen.

Cincinnati, OhioNovember 3, 2024Dear Marianne, I don’t know about you, but I garden a lot more productively when I’m rushed and surly. And I’ve been both lately. Having a hard deadline is why. My hip replacement will be on December 4th, so I’m feeling the urgency. And the pain of a destroyed hip. Leave the leaves? Precisely. Actually, leave them but in a precise manner. Same with spent perennials. No time for indecision. No time for clever. No time for doing things by the book. Just plow through.
