It’s 2038. A group of NASA astronauts headed for Mars on a six-month scientific mission carry with them personalized stem cell banks. The stem cells can be injected to help ward off the effects of space radiation, such as cancer or degenerative disorders that impact the heart, blood vessels and eyes. Sound far-fetched? Even something out of a science fiction novel? Not if Kamesh Narasimhan’s research bears fruit.

Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions is partnering with the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors to address a 14-year life expectancy gap between residents of north Scottsdale and south Phoenix. Deborah Williams, a director and clinical assistant professor in the college, is the principal investigator for ASU’s involvement in the five-year project, which is being funded by a $1 million award in Community Solutions Funding from the board of supervisors.

When Byron Scott left Arizona State University without a diploma in 1983, he made his mother a promise: He would finish his education one day. Then life got in the way. The good life. Scott was a first-round pick of the San Diego Clippers. He played in the NBA until 1997, winning three championships with the Los Angeles Lakers along the way. He became a coach following his playing career until retiring in 2017. Three years later, the pandemic hit. Scott had time — too much time, really — to think.

Editor’s note: This story is featured in the 2024 year in review. ARLINGTON, Texas — Gerry Dillingham shook her head as she took in the scene around her. Her son, Arizona State University football coach Kenny Dillingham, was on the podium set up near the end zone at AT&T Stadium, accepting the Big 12 championship trophy on Dec. 7 after the Sun Devils beat Iowa State, 45-19, and in the process qualified for the College Football Playoff. Confetti fell to the ground around her.
