Sometimes seeing isn’t believing. At least that’s how Italian gymnast Alice D’Amato thinks she would have reacted if you’d shown her a photo of herself atop the Olympic balance beam podium a year ago. “That that photo had been created with ChatGPT and that it would just remain a photo,” D’Amato told Olympics.com of the hypothetical, laughing during an exclusive interview. “I never expected it… I didn’t even aim that high because I really never expected it.

Manila Esposito has quietly become the anchor of Italy’s gymnastics golden generation. The 18-year-old enters this week’s European Gymnastics Championships in Leipzig, Germany, as the defending champion in the women’s team, all-around, balance beam and floor exercise, and at the centre of a squad still riding the highs of a historic Olympic team silver medal last summer in Paris. “I hope that my character, my attitude will have a positive influence on my teammates,” Esposito told Olympics.com.

Hezly Rivera will lead the US women at the upcoming 2025 Pan American Championships in Panama City, Panama, according to USA Gymnastics. It will be the first international competition for Rivera since she helped Team USA claim its third Olympic women’s gymnastics team title in four Games at Paris 2024. She competed earlier this season at the Winter Cup, performing only on the balance beam. Rivera is joined by a mix of seasoned competitors and newcomers.

The Dutch women will be without two of their stars at the upcoming European Artistic Gymnastics Championships, set for 26–31 May in Leipzig, Germany. Two-time Olympian Eythora Thorsdottir, who is returning to the sport after missing the Olympic Games Paris 2024 due to injury, posted on Instagram this week that a “minor tear” in her calf will keep her out of competition. “It’s nothing major, but just bad timing which makes it impossible to make it to the European Championships,” she wrote.

There won’t be much rest for U.S. gymnast Joscelyn Roberson. The 2024 Team USA Olympic alternate is fresh off her freshman campaign for the University of Arkansas and is already hard at work on her next big goal: the 2025 World Championships. “Our plan, I think, is to go to Classics. We’re not sure if I’m going to do the all-around or just a few events first. It’ll depend on how I progress,” Roberson told Olympics.com this week in an exclusive interview.
