On Thursday, Las Cruces Public Schools Superintendent Ignacio Ruiz hosted the 2025 State of the District Address at the Las Cruces Convention Center. Mayfield High School student Kynley Cartright introduced Superintendent Ruiz to the stage to give his State of the District Address. The theme of the event was “Where All Learners Thrive.”“At Las Cruces Public Schools, we are proudly charting the course for a future where all learners thrive,” Ruiz said to the audience.

On Monday, the Las Cruces City Council held its first regular session meeting for the month of May. During Monday’s meeting, a resolution originally set to pass as part of the consent agenda was instead opened up for discussion. The resolution was to rescind a 2009 resolution re-designating the old Post Office and current Municipal Court building on East Griggs Street as the future home of the Las Cruces Museum of Art.

According to Medicare.gov, the total nursing staff turnover rate for New Mexico was higher than the national average, showing a 53.4% state turnover rate compared to the national average of 48.4%. The turnover rate for New Mexico registered nurses was 55%, compared to a 45.1% national average. A new Nurse Residency program at MountainView Regional Medical Center aims to address the nurse retention issue. As part of a nationwide “May Day Strong” day of action, all three NMSU unions and other sister unions gathered Thursday evening on the NMSU campus. Scott Brocato has more. The various unions gathered in front of Milton Hall on the NMSU campus to build solidarity to stand against what they feel are attacks on labor, universities, public education, and communities. All three NMSU unions were there: Graduate Workers United, NMSU-NEA, and AFSCME 2393.
