For a while, movie stars didn’t come much bigger than Burt Reynolds, who ruled the roost as one of Hollywood’s most bankable drawing cards from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. All good things must come to an end, though, and the actor was the architect of his own destruction. Not on purpose, of course, but he was self-aware enough to realise that a string of bad choices and even worse movies had eroded his star power to such an extent that he was staring irrelevancy in the face.

The three-time Academy Award winner once called himself the most successful actor in the history of cinema, and he wasn’t being arrogant.

Some actors find it easier to play villains than others, and Billy Bob Thornton has played a few irredeemable characters in his time. However, no matter how hard he tries, he’ll never embody anyone he detests as much as a fictional figure whose mere existence onscreen makes his blood boil. With the greatest respect to Thornton, he’s got the face of an antagonist.

Despite being the son of James Brolin, the stepson of Barbra Streisand, and landing an early role in Richard Donner’s beloved The Goonies, Josh Brolin was two decades into his career before he became a star. He was working solidly, but that breakthrough simply didn’t materialise. Of course, it didn’t help that he was starring in forgettable dreck like Paul Verhoeven’s Hollow Man, Into the Blue, The Mod Squad, and Best Laid Plans, and it wasn’t until 2007 that he finally enjoyed a year to remember.

Plenty of stars were cut from a similar cloth as Cary Grant during Hollywood’s ‘Golden Age’, even if he was in a class of his own. It was a period when most of the industry’s leading men carried similar traits, which meant it would never last forever. Think of Grant’s peers who dominated the silver screen throughout the 1940s and 1950s; most tick at least a couple of the same boxes.

As his social media biography proudly proclaims, Tom Cruise has been “running in movies since 1981,” and it doesn’t even feel like a Tom Cruise movie if he doesn’t end up pounding the pavement. At least the actor is savvy enough to realise that it’s become a meme, which he makes a point of embracing. If he’s handed a script that doesn’t involve a running scene, he’ll probably throw his creative weight around to ensure one gets added.
