A CIF championship team, a league champion team, and a league Player of the Year topped the winter sports season at Point Loma High. Once again, it was the boys soccer team, peaking at just the right time under head coach Elliott Savitz, that brought another CIF championship banner to the Pointer campus. The team defeated Calexico High in penalty kicks to win the Div. I trophy.

Power and pitching are two words that describe the 2025 Pointer softball team. Head coach Billy Hunyady, now in his seventh year, noted his team has already hit seven home runs by five different players in the first eight games. Current players who have blasted round-trippers include freshmen Sienna Balistreri and Ella Poulin, two each, sophomore Leyton MacPherson, seniors Annika Isaacson and Nanako Schroth, one each. “Last year, the team hit three all year,” Hunyady noted. Everything in Shelley Clark’s life was going great as if she was living a dream. The star Pointer athlete had lettered in three sports at Point Loma High and been a member of the first of four legendary girls’ basketball teams that won consecutive state championships from 1984 to 1987. “I was good at basketball, very good at volleyball, and great at softball,” Clark says.

A total of 28 Point Loma High School athletes and a veteran coach were recognized for their accomplishments during Fall sports. All-CIF athletes were selected from 124 high schools in the San Diego section and Imperial County. All-League athletes were selected in different sports by coaches or media representatives. ALL-CIF TEAMSThe list is headed by junior girls tennis player Noel Allen, the only Pointer athlete to receive First Team All-CIF San Diego Section honors.

The girls cross country team at Point Loma High continued to rewrite history, scoring the school’s highest-ever finish when they ran to second place at the state CIF meet held on Nov. 30 at Woodward Park in Fresno. In the past, the girls have qualified for the state meet only twice noted head coach Keith DeLong, now in his 14th year at the helm. First were the girls of 2017 who finished 16th in Div. II. Last year the girls finished 15th in Div. III.
