Huffing and puffing over a lava ridge, you arrive, sweating, at your dog on point. Another step, and chukars are up! A spinning shot drops the hard-earned bird 50 yards down the slope you just clambered up. “Fetch,” you whisper, and your dog looks at you like you’re speaking Spanish. A half hour later, after poking among the rocks and puckerbrush, you’re back where you started, without that bird you shot. You’re livid, your dog’s oblivious, and your hunting buddy is hiding a smirk. Sound familiar?

Time to take stock. Guns cleaned, dog rested and doctored, photos posted on social media, and birds are in the freezer. Now, let’s take a long, unvarnished look at your just-concluded hunting season. Could it have been better? If you answered “no,” congratulations and send me some of your mojo. “Hunt ‘em up!” and you’re into the field with your favorite hunting buddy: your dog. Only this time, your shout is muted by snow-covered branches and ground. Radical changes in weather require new strategies based on different bird behavior.

Even if you can’t migrate like a duck when winter’s icy grip takes hold, you can change locales and hedge your bets when hunting your favorite upland species. The only question is how far? A few miles? A few hundred yards? Or is it sometimes more a “mental migration?”Just like us, birds need three things: shelter, warmth, and food. But trees are bare skeletons, wind shrieks, and groceries are scarce. Armed with those criteria, a savvy hunter can find a starting point in almost any habitat. Or can they?

The place is magical enough. Add the drama of an annular eclipse of the sun, and the voodoo ascended to another level. We were in the heart of the display, smack-dab beneath the paths of the two stellar bodies as they crossed one of the least-populated spots in the lower 48 states, which was also my favorite Nevada locale for hunting chukar partridges.
