AbstractIncreasing interest in seabed resource use in the ocean is introducing new pressures on deep-sea environments, the ecological impacts of which need to be evaluated carefully. The complexity of these ecosystems and the dearth of comprehensive data pose significant challenges to predicting potential impacts.

A research project co-led by Blue Carbon Services and NIWA will aim to provide New Zealand’s first national estimate of natural kelp-carbon sequestration in the marine environment. Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide. Blue Carbon is the term for carbon captured by the world's ocean and coastal ecosystems. Kelp forests absorb carbon from the atmosphere via photosynthesis.
