Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has driven a surge in demand for data centre capacity in Europe. Data from the International Energy Agency shows that in the EU, data centres account for around 2-4% of total electricity consumption. However, this figure has already surpassed 10% in at least five US states and 20% in Ireland, where it is predicted to reach 30% by 2028. Global forecasts suggest that data centres could account for up 13% of global power consumption by 2030.
