MOOSIC — DJ LeMahieu is close to returning to the major leagues. The New York Yankees veteran all-star infielder began his final step Wednesday on a rehab assignment with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. He started the first game of a doubleheader against the Rochester Red Wings at PNC Field, playing third base and batting second. Facing Rochester righthander Seth Shuman, LeMahieu went 2 for 3 with sharp, opposite-field singles to right in the first and sixth innings.

DUNMORE — In recent seasons, Dunmore might not have been able to recover from an early deficit against a dominant pitcher. But coach Mike Hallinan said this year’s Bucks are different, and it showed on a drizzly Monday. They answered the challenge to defeat Old Forge, 4-3, in an entertaining, well-played Lackawanna League Division II baseball game at Schautz Stadium.

For the second time in five days, Valley View graduate Mason Black and Scranton graduate Jake McCarthy faced each other when their respective teams, the Sacramento River Cats and Reno Aces, met in the series finale Sunday at Sutter Health Park in California. The River Cats won in 10 innings, 3-2. Black started and pitched a season-high seven innings, allowing two runs (one unearned) and three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. He earned no decision.

A matchup between two former Lackawanna League baseball stars took place Tuesday. However, it wasn’t at Citi Field in New York, as anticipated. Instead, it happened 2,833 miles west in California. Scranton graduate Jake McCarthy faced Valley View graduate Mason Black when their respective Triple-A teams, the Reno Aces and Sacramento River Cats, met at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento. McCarthy went 3 for 5 and scored twice in Reno’s 7-3 victory.
