    More than 600 firearms were turned in over the weekend at a gun buy-back event in Syracuse, including 130 assault weapons. More than half of the firearms were handguns. People also turned in long guns and even two ghost guns, which don’t have serial numbers. The state attorney general’s office and Syracuse partnered for the event, which aims to reduce the number of guns in the community. Since 2019, more than 9,000 guns have been collected statewide.

    Syracuse homeowners face a 2% property tax increase under Mayor Ben Walsh’s final budget proposal for next year. Rising costs and declining revenue are making it difficult to balance the $348 million spending plan. Some of the expenses driving the increases are out of the city’s control, such as retirement, medical insurance, salaries, and wages. Mayor Walsh says property owners are being asked to help. “We do not take that lightly,” said Walsh.

The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency is once again holding its annual Earth Day Clean-up later this month, and registration ends in less than a week.
