The Rangers are hovering around the .500 mark as we approach the mathematical midpoint of the season. Fans are praying for a level of consistency at the plate to match the club’s stellar pitching. During a nice run of form last week, the club won seven of eight and swept the White Sox, giving some the sense a corner had been turned.

Last Thursday afternoon as the Rangers were in the late stages of getting shut out in their series finale against the Athletics, I sent my good friend (and fellow D Magazine contributor) Jamey Newberg a text that read, “Dark days.” To which Jamey promptly replied, “The darkest.”Now maybe that is a tad hyperbolic for the two of us to share that sentiment in early May. But it’s in our DNA as lifelong Rangers fans to assume the team will slug and score an adequate number of runs.

There’s a month left in what, at best, can be described as a disheartening title defense for your Texas Rangers. The bats have betrayed the club and the fan base in 2024, as the Rangers linger at double-digit games under .500 and 10 games back (or thereabout) in the division all while making a habit of losing series. (They have one series win since late July.) Despite a slew of injuries, until the All-Star break, Texas held things together relatively well on the pitching front.

For a handful of days Arlington, Texas, was the epicenter of the baseball universe as fans celebrated Major League baseball’s 94th Midsummer Classic. North Texas pretty much nailed the event despite horrid color schemes for the uniforms, a historically wobbly national anthem before the home run derby, and a heaping helping of the same tired western/cowboy/horse at the Whataburger drive-thru/eye roll inducing for locals’ motif that gets ladled onto every national showcase event in our region.

He painted this twice, didn’t he? I don’t know, did he? I think so, he gave up on one for a while. I like the girl on the left, scratching. Why her? Her eyes are closed, she seems happy. Almost like she’s somewhere else. I used to dance you know. Ballet? Paris Opera. Why don’t you start again? I did for a while. My mother died. But the itch remains. She used to stand so still when she watched me. Strange, how beauty freezes us. I stood like that before her body, almost on point.
