After a fun foray with a past companion, we return to the Doctor and Belinda Chandra storyline. “The Story and the Engine” is more focused on the Doctor but infuses ideas from traditional folk tales into the narrative. Let’s dive into the dense episode, because while a lot happens, it’s a letdown in a season full of excellent episodes. Omo tells the story of a fire in his village at his local barbershop. He reveals that the Doctor helped extinguish the fire and plant new crops for the village.

After the film premiered at SXSW, our Alan French called the slasher film Clown in a Cornfield a “perfect crowd pleaser” and “a masterful showcase from one of horror’s most comedic figures.” Following a group of teens who find themselves being hunted down by their town’s lovable mascot, Frendo the Clown, Clown in a Cornfield feels like a send-up of classic horror cinema that is also set on forging its own path in the genre.

As a self-proclaimed supporter and fan of Australian cinema, The Moogai falls just short for me. From the emotional wrecking ball of a film, Babyteeth, to the powerful crime drama Lantana, to the haunting Picnic at Hanging Rock, the Aussies know how to stir a wide range of emotions that linger long after the credits roll. With The Moogai, the film explores haunting Australian history through the horror-thriller lens of colonialism, a force that has profoundly shaped the country’s past.

The push to find new angles on established stories has led audiences to some strange places. For the Disney live-action films, it’s ended in disaster, while the new approaches to Little Women, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and The Invisible Man led to critical success. Juliet & Romeo hopes to accomplish the same reinvention, providing its loaded ensemble with a pop ballad musical from the iconic music producer E. Kidd Bogart.

I often find myself watching a film I know absolutely nothing about — something that’s become quite common, as I tend to avoid trailers and try to go in blind most of the time. Sometimes, I can’t even form any expectations beforehand. Netflix’s Nonnas is one of those cases. I did know that Vince Vaughn (Hacksaw Ridge) played the lead role and that the story somehow involved Italian grandmothers, based on the title, but that was about it.
