Throughout this whole PGA Tour-LIV saga—which feels longer than the Cold War—I’ve been on the block of supporting a reunification where the game’s best players come together more often. I still believe pro golf is better that way given how golf is, relatively speaking, a niche entertainment option with a bloated viewing experience. Watering down the product by splitting it up has never made sense. However, the first few months of this year has forced a recalibration.

I’ll sound like an arrogant jerk in this article. And, well, the haters have a valid point there. Regardless, I will press forward with my argument: I miss pre-pandemic golf. Before you start launching 9-irons through my apartment window, let me concede that this is a nuanced discussion. The celebration is still happening. Rory McIlroy won the Masters, finally claiming his elusive green jacket. He is the sixth man to ever complete the career Grand Slam, giving him a case to be among the 10 greatest golfers to ever live. But now our attention is turning to the future. With McIlroy no longer carrying the burden of a lengthy major drought, maybe there are more big-time victories in his immediate future.

Last week, Grant Horvat posted a tweet saying he had been invited to play in a PGA Tour event but wasn’t sure he should accept the offer. It turns out the tournament in question is the Barracuda Championship, an opposite-field event at Old Greenwood in Truckee, Calif. The tournament will be played while the Open Championship is at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. To me, this is a no-brainer: Horvat should play. There is a lot to unpack here.

One of golf’s most famous destinations is gaining another course. Pinehurst Resort announced the creation of No. 11, which will be the second course at the Pinehurst Sandmines area of the property. Construction at Pinehurst No. 11 will begin later this year. The Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design is expected to open in late 2027, a little more than two years from now. No. 11 joins Tom Doak’s design of Pinehurst No. 10 at the 900-acre site that used to be mined for its deep reservoirs of sand.

After finally delivering a Masters victory and completing the career Grand Slam, it’s time to reassess Rory McIlroy’s place in golf history. Last year, I put together a ranking of the best golfers the men’s game has ever seen. While you can argue positioning, I think the first seven names on the list are mandatory for any top 10 of the greatest players: Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, Gary Player and Arnold Palmer. The ranking gets hazier after that point.
