The Cubs welcomed the Marlins to Wrigley Field on Monday night to begin a three-game series. Chicago got a great starting pitching effort and used a big inning to win. Both starting pitchers, Colin Rea and Cal Quantrill, were very sharp early and no one scored through the first four frames. Dansby Swanson broke the deadlock with a two-run homer off of Quantrill in the bottom of the 5th to put the North Siders on top 2-0.

The Cubs (23-18) lost two of three to the Mets at Citi Field this weekend as they finally wrapped up their brutal first 40 games of the schedule against a bevy of contenders. They acquitted themselves quite well, emerging from the gauntlet in first place with a slew of struggling teams ahead on the calendar, beginning with three against the Marlins at Wrigley starting Monday. Miami (15-24) has lost 12 of the last 16 games to drop below the Nationals into last place in the NL East.

The Cubs and Mets played the rubber match of their series at Citi Field Sunday afternoon. It was an evenly matched game until the home team prevailed in a battle of the bullpens. New York grabbed the lead in the bottom of the 2nd when catcher Luis Torrens hit an RBI triple off of Matthew Boyd. Griffin Canning completely dominated the North Siders through the first five frames, allowing just an infield single.

The Cubs were greeted rather rudely in their series opener against the Mets at Citi Field Friday night. New York hit four home runs off of starter Jameson Taillon and coasted to an easy victory. Francisco Lindor homered to lead off the bottom of the 1st and it was only the beginning. Brett Baty and Jeff McNeil each hit their own solo shots in the 2nd to put the Mets on top 3-0. Clay Holmes was much sharper than Taillon and kept the Cubs scoreless early.
