The Cubs (39-23) won their seventh series in a row by taking two of three from the Nationals in Washington. Chicago scored a combined 15 runs in their two victories as they moved a season-high 16 games over .500 mark. Now the degree of difficulty ratchets up significantly with a trip to Detroit to face the best team in baseball. The Tigers (41-23) made a dramatic run to the playoffs in 2024 and they haven’t slowed down since, becoming the first team to win 40 games in 2025.

The Cubs and Nationals battled in the second game of their series Wednesday night at Nats Park. Both starting pitchers were outstanding, but it was Washington that ended up on top earning a shutout win. The North Siders loaded the bases on three consecutive singles to begin the game. Nats starter MacKenzie Gore retired the next three hitters to escape the jam with no runs scoring. Matthew Boyd was terrific early, retiring the first 16 batters he faced Wednesday.

The Cubs traveled to Washington to open up a series against the Nationals on Tuesday night. Chicago fell behind early before another crooked number in the middle of the game led to a victory. The Nats took the lead in the bottom of the 1st against Cade Horton with an RBI single by Luis Garcia Jr. Michael Busch tripled off of Trevor Williams and scored the tying run on a Dansby Swanson sacrifice fly in the 2nd. Washington scored on a groundout and sac fly to move ahead 3-1 in the 3rd inning.

The Cubs (37-22) won their sixth consecutive series, taking two of three against the Reds at Wrigley this weekend as they finish a successful stretch against teams with losing records. They put up a 14-4 record in those 18 games and are 15 over .500 for the first time since 2018. The North Siders relied on their pitching during home games against the Rockies and Reds, allowing just 14 runs across six contests.
