Unexpectedly, this has been underrated by the people that like it. It's not SPECIAL exactly but it has much more satiric bite than has been marketed, closer to TROPIC THUNDER in tone than THE NICE GUYS (thank god, because NICE GUYS stinks), and often quite funny, not just in that blasé, snotty irreverent way that Leitch's films so often are. In fact this is his best film yet. Gosling and Blunt are off the charts electrically. I think they must be fucking in real life.

partner watchstunning, a masterpiece, so far the best film I've seen in 2024. Why is this getting so ignored and knocked? I have to think it's because my peers in mainstream criticism have allergies to women and girls' sexuality, as well as to madcap slapstick. Combine those two things and you have anathema to a culture that aesthetic prefers grimness, trauma, pain, and intensity.

First time watchBeen putting this off for a while. It's been screaming at me on my DVD shelf. I guess I just got turned off by the awards season getting crushed by Covid. It was a reminder of a different time. That said I'm glad I finally got to it because all in all, a handsome and worthy project. You can sense Haynes' anger and I love that, it seems so rarely to be the mode we get him in. I mean what was really his last angry movie? FAR FROM HEAVEN, maybe?

Partner watch As a doc, it's very basic, very straightforward, very Rob Reiner, which is to say mid at the formal level. But in terms of content and entertainment value, it is, like everything Albert Brooks touches, as spectacular as a fireworks show. I've really not done the true deep dive on him that he deserves but I did go through a small phase of idolizing him and I don't really think that's left my system. Albert is every bit as brilliant as James L.
