Between January and May he had Covid, the flu, a back injury and most worryingly of all, a persistent chest infection which kept sidelined him for two weeks at the end of April“Being away for two weeks is kinda unheard of in rowing,” he says. “You might take two weeks off at the end of the season. To be honest I did worry [about the Olympics]. It was probably irrational but when you are in the middle of it the road back seems long.”The chest infection meant he missed the European Championships.

I was the proverbial rookie. On my first day in the cramped newsroom in Wine Street, a colleague painstakingly showed me how to put paper into the typewriter. Thankfully, the late Séamus Finn, editor of the paper, was willing to take a gamble on a 19-year-old greenhorn with no formal training. Within a year, I had the opportunity to report on two of the biggest news stories in the history of the paper.
