New applicants for retrofitting under the Warmer Homes Scheme āmay face longer waiting timesā due to the high number of applications, the minister for the environment has said. Darragh OāBrien said the waiting time for the scheme operated by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) reduced significantly between 2022 and 2024, but increased applications and the increased number of ādeeper retrofitsā could add to the time households were waiting.

The disposable income available to Irish households has jumped by more than €30,000 on average in the space of a decade, while the richest fifth of people earn almost five times more than the poorest 20%, new figures have shown. The Central Statistics Office said the highest 20% of Irish households enjoyed disposable income of €163,289 on average in 2023, with the lowest having just €35,010. The average household had €83,058 in disposable income.

Local authorities have been forced to put applications for a crucial scheme aimed at preventing families becoming homeless on hold due to a cut in Government funding, it has emerged. The tenant-in-situ scheme had seen local authorities authorised to step in and buy a rental property if the landlord was selling up, allowing the tenants to remain in place and continue renting.

Major pharmaceutical companies have warned the European Commission that they may divert up to €100bn they had planned to invest in Europe to the US and elsewhere. Signed by companies including Ireland-headquartered giants such as Pfizer, Eli Lilly, and MSD, the letter warns that EU member states were at risk of losing out from an industry “exodus” as firms were looking to increase manufacturing capacity elsewhere, the has reported.

Streaming giant Netflix is set to release a documentary next month about the brutal killing of Irishman Jason Corbett by his American wife and father-in-law. Mr Corbett, a 39-year-old father of two from Limerick, had been battered to death with a brick and baseball bat by his American wife Molly, now 40, and her former FBI agent father Tom, now 73, in August 2015.
