Home building has hit another dismal low-point, with new data confirming that last month's housing commencement figures were worst seen in May for 10 years. Last month, housing commencements - the number of new residential projects that have officially begun construction - were less than half the number of May last year. With the exception of May 2020, when covid-19 shut the construction sector, the May 2025 figure is the worst since 2015, with just 1,024 homes getting underway.

Plans for more than 400 new student bedspaces in Cork have received the green light from An Bord Pleanála despite heavy local opposition. Lyonshall Ltd can now progress with the plans for the 408-bed purpose-built student accommodation development on the site of the former St Joseph’s Convent on Model Farm Road to the west of the city centre.

Lord Henry Mount Charles, the custodian of Slane Castle who turned it into one of Ireland’s most iconic gig venues, has died at the age of 74. The driving force behind turning the Meath estate into the location that has played host to acts such as U2, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones died on Wednesday following a long battle with cancer. The first Slane festival took place in 1981, featuring a young U2 and headlined by Thin Lizzy.
