The ceasefire between India and Pakistan is largely holding, despite both sides accusing each other of violations. Hours after the truce, heavy exchanges of fire were reported last night, but subsided this morning. The latest violence began after 26 tourists were killed in Indian-controlled Kashmir. India blamed the attack on Pakistan – which has denied any involvement – and says it has killed more than 100 militants. Today, both countries are assessing the damage caused in the conflict.

After days of cross-border fire, shelling, drone and missile attacks, India and Pakistan have stepped back from the brink. At least for now. A “full and immediate ceasefire” is in place after talks – with President Trump and the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio both quick to claim credit. But there have been reports tonight of possible violations and no sign restrictions on trade and visas will be lifted.

Explosions have been heard tonight in parts of Indian-administered Kashmir – with Pakistan accused of launching another wave of drone strikes. Earlier India claimed it had intercepted hundreds of Pakistani drones which it said were on the way to target cities and military bases. Pakistan described the allegations as “baseless and misleading” and denied any “offensive actions”.

Pakistan’s defence minister has said that a military incursion by India is imminent, following the deadly militant attack on tourists in disputed Kashmir last week. India blames Pakistan and has dismissed Pakistan’s call for an independent investigation as an attempt to evade responsibility. The nuclear armed neighbours have taken several steps against each other in recent days. India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty.

Police and soldiers have been searching homes and forests in Indian-run Kashmir, following Tuesday’s attack which killed 26 people at a tourist site. India says two of the suspected gunmen are Pakistani citizens – raising tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations. They have suspended visas for each other’s nationals, while India has also suspended a decades-old water-sharing treaty.
