The term ‘Third World’ was coined in 1952 by the French demographer Alfred Sauvy, in his attempt to map the emerging alignments and coalitions of the Cold War.1 The First World comprised the United States and its capitalist allies, including western Europe, Japan, and Australia. The Second World comprised the communist Soviet Union (USSR) and its eastern European satellites.
