I’ve been on a nature themed board game kick for a while and FloraVista (coming to Kickstarter this May) is another game in this genre all about cultivating the best garden. From designers Carey Drake and Lanny Gross, we got a chance to try the prototype and I am excited to see the final version!In FloraVista, you play as one of eight historic botanists over twelve rounds (seasons) and score points after playing matching pairs of regions and flowers.

Last year I went down an epic rabbit hole of board games that I would have loved to try from a number of publishers. Thanks to Allplay, I got a chance to try two more of them this year! Both Chomp (Clarence Simpson) and Pollen (Reiner Knizia and Beth Sobel) have incredible art and graphic design by Anca Gavril and are part of Allplay‘s small box and fun for everyone lines respectively.

One of the most fascinating aspects of covering board games is realizing just how many games there are and how many themes the games are based on, including Botanicus from German publisher Hans im Gluck, distributed in English by Asmodee. In Botanicus, players compete to create the best botanical garden for visitors in the late 19th century as an aristocrat. It’s such a random theme, yet works so well because of the thoughtful design of the game pieces and gameplay.

Perfect for the Halloween season, Vampire Therapist from Little Bat Games is a super interactive narrative adventure where you play as Sam, a cowboy who is offering therapy sessions to four different vampires with a variety of problems. With beautiful art, laugh aloud dialogue, all of the depth you should expect from a game about therapy, and some of the best voice acting that I’ve heard in a long time, Vampire Therapist is an instant 10/10, do recommend.

Open World Critter Cove is Engaging, Needs More Tinkering

It seems like every week there’s a new cozy open world adventure game with farming, cooking, NPC interactions, and building. Critter Cove from Gentleman Rat Studios caught my eye when I had finished the last update on a different cozy sim, and all of a sudden, I found myself five hours into the demo. Having now played 45 hours, I can say that Critter Cove is definitely delivering on its town building life sim premise, but needs just a bit more tinkering to fully realize it.
