Enhanced data sharing with gardaí will make the requirements redundant, super junior transport minister Seán Canney said. “We’re going to get rid of all that clutter, which will be welcomed by many motorists,” he said, mentioning that several European countries have already abandoned the need for physical evidence on every vehicle. The National Vehicle and Driver File Bill, now going to the drafting stage, will allow for the abolition of the requirement to display a motor tax disc.

The first opinion poll by the Irish Times since the general election shows the party plunging to 16pc, its joint worst ever showing. It basically means only one in six voters would give their first preference to the party that founded the Free State, one of the Big Two of yesteryear.
