A relatively large variety of frontend frameworks are implemented in the JavaScript programming language. Occasionally, though, it becomes challenging to determine which should be applied to a new project. Or the state of the web platform is such that we do not need any framework at all. Frameworks provide web designers essential features. Likewise, there are cases when designers can solve a problem using only JavaScript.

The last couple of years have seen a lot of job titles updated from DevOps engineer to platform engineer. For most, it’s been a change in name only. It wasn’t a natural substitution anyway, since DevOps focuses on operations, while platform engineering centers on developer experience. A successful DevOps or platform engineering transformation will optimize technology, people and processes on both sides of that persistent silo.

When you use Linux, you know there are always multiple ways to solve a problem. Take, for instance, the need to create backups. Yes, you could opt to use one of the many backup solutions (such as Bacula, rsync, Deja Dup, Fwbackups, Backupninja, Simple Backup Suite, Kbackup, BackupPC … the list goes on and on). You’ll find command line tools, GUI tools, and even some web-based backup solutions.

This post is a little different, because I have known about this software for a rather long time, I know the creator (the inimitable Jeremy Ruston), and I’ve even worked with him. TiddlyWiki is a “non-linear personal web notebook,” as well as an exemplar project in the open source community.

Linux has taken over so many sectors of business and done so while always remaining free, open source, secure and highly flexible. As a long-time Linux user (nearly 30 years), flexibility has always been one of the more important aspects of the operating system for me. With Linux, I can do anything. And if there isn’t an app for something, I could even write a Bash script to serve the needed purpose. What’s a Bash script, you ask? Have you ever written a text-based application? Maybe in Python?

In line with the cat-and-mouse nature of cybersecurity, threat groups over the past several years have taken to writing their malware in modern programming languages to leverage their cross-platform capabilities and to better evade antivirus and other security tools. While more malicious code is now being written in Go, Python, and others, Rust increasingly appears to be the language of choice for many bad actors as they migrate away from C and C++.

Cockroach Labs is eliminating the free-to-use “open core” stripped-down version of its distributed database, offering in its place the more fully-featured enterprise version. The company plans the switchover on November 18, with the debut of 24.3 version of CockroachDB. Cockroach will ask for payment, via an annual contract, only from those businesses with $10 million in annual revenue, and from government agencies.

This is the challenge the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology took on, in an effort to secure government secrets from tomorrow’s most powerful computing technologies. On Tuesday, the agency released the first products of this work: three encryption standards guaranteed to be unbreakable, even by tomorrow’s (still non-existent) quantum computers, FIPS 203, FIPS 204 and FIPS 205.
