KYIV -- In 2022, for the first time in her 34 years as a teacher, Lydia Prokopenko didn't get to see her first-graders graduate. Instead, her elementary school in eastern Ukraine was shut down, and she was forced into early retirement by a full-scale Russian military invasion. Her home village, Studenok, was just kilometers from intense fighting in the nearby Holy Mountains National Nature Park, where Russian troops soon wrested control of the park's wooded cliffs.

A Russian military aircraft hit the ground in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kostyantynivka on October 5. No one was hurt, but the impact damaged several houses. Amid contradictory information on details of the incident, Ukrainian officials said the aircraft was a downed Russian Su-34 fighter bomber. It remains to be clarified whether the plane was shot down by the Ukrainian or Russian military or if the crash was caused by something else.

Two people were killed in air strikes on Mykolayivka, a city in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, late on September 7. The casualties were Ukrainian animal-welfare volunteers who came to provide care for stray dogs and were staying in the Hotel Zorya, their teammate told RFE/RL. Authorities in Ukraine's Donetsk region say a British citizen was found dead under the rubble on August 25, a day after a missile hit Hotel Sapfir in the eastern city of Kramatorsk. Six other people were wounded, among them several foreign journalists. A Russian missile struck the hotel before midnight on August 24, Ukraine's Independence Day, according to local authorities.
