We read with great interest and congratulate Mao et al. on their study entitled ‘Glycaemic control is a modifiable risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma and liver-related mortality in patients with diabetes’ [1]. The results of this well-designed study revealed glycaemic control as an independent risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and liver-related mortality. HCC is the sixth most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide [2].
