The trade war between China and the United States is intensifying, influencing trade flows, consumption, and the economy. President Trump’s executive order imposing tariffs on Chinese imports sparked limited retaliatory tariffs from China. Additional proposed tariffs targeted Canada and Mexico, but the leaders of those respective countries negotiated with the U.S., leading to a one month pause of the tariffs but leaving uncertainty on the table.

According to the United Nations’ Environment Programme, cities globally are expected to produce 2.2 billion tons of waste each year by 2025. Given the economic, environmental and health impacts of waste, it is important for the textile industry to reduce, reuse and recycle the waste. For example, in a spinning mill, recyclable and reusable textile waste from the blending room to winding ranges from 15 percent to 25 percent. Waste costs money in and of itself, and it adds to the cost of production.

Prior to and throughout 2024, the National Cotton Council (NCC) focused its efforts on shaping policies for a new farm bill. The NCC has been proactive in communicating its priorities to Congress and the Administration, advocating for a meaningful farm bill that includes an effective safety net and comprehensive risk management tools. This year’s crop is covered by the one-year extension approved by Congress and signed by President Biden late last year.
