My wife was gone for a grad-school conference for nearly a week, and it’s been the longest we’ve been separated since being parents, but it brought my son and I closer in a way that I haven’t experienced before. Arden and I are both used to extended periods of time with just each other throughout the summer, but this has been the longest stretch while we are in our daily, school-year routine without greeting mom at the door every evening.

Much of what I’ve bought as a parent is so temporary. Clothes, books, toys — all seem to go with each leap in our son’s development. Those things that stick around, though, have become important parts of our lives. Our last purchase, though, is one I’ve been equally excited about. It’s sticking around. I ordered Arden an electric tractor he can drive.

Being close to family while you’re raising kids is the greatest parenting hack there is. This is a shoutout to all of them who’ve given us the greatest gift they can: a life where freetime is even a little bit possible. When Arden was born, he made nearly a dozen people ecstatic grandparents, aunts, or uncles. While we know Arden is lucky to have that many people supporting him, my wife and I often feel that it’s us who are really the lucky ones.

We’ve got cabin fever more this year as a family than we ever have before. Winters were easy when Arden was a baby and going out was as simple as bundling him up and walking around the block. Now, he’s loose. My son turned two in January and he certainly has periods where he embodies the terrible in the terrible twos cliche. I think it’s always been a characteristic of mine to try and disprove cliches – and there’s a lot of cliches in parenthood.

My dad is the youngest of nine children, which meant my most formative experiences with my family included nearly 20 cousins around my age. Many of my most vivid memories of childhood include many of those cousins. From holidays, to birthdays, to camping trips, to parties, and, now, experiencing parenthood.

The Spring Garden Township, York County-based developer is calling this Cascade Capital Fund I and is focusing on 150 to 300 unit multi-family deals in the Harrisburg and Charlotte, NC areas.

We’re entering week six of one of us being sick with something continuously since the start of the school year. It’s likely a combination of Arden starting daycare in August, me starting at a new school district, and my wife rotating around different hospitals for clinicals. Either way, we’re over it. Before she was always exposed to COVID in the ICU, I’ve seen my wife sick maybe three times throughout the course of our entire relationship.

Two weeks ago we lost my cousin suddenly and tragically and my relationship with my son has become even deeper. My dad is the youngest of nine kids, so growing up with dozens of cousins was always something I valued and those memories form many of my core ones today. Having so many aunts, uncles, and cousins, we’ve all seen tragedy, triumphs, and everything in between. The sudden passing of my cousin recently is something we’ve all been carrying, both together and quietly.

Of all of the transitions that come with early parenthood, sending my son off to daycare might be the biggest for us so far. Since my wife has gone to all-day and in-person clinicals for her graduate program in the spring, I’ve had the summer off with our 19-month old son. We had three days of overlap where we needed a sitter and we asked our parents to help. As the summer comes to an end, it’s time we finally start what we’ve been lucky to postpone for as long as possible: daycare.
