    On July 25, 2024, Governor Healey signed “an Act Modernizing Firearm Laws” (“Chapter 135” or the “Act”), a new comprehensive gun law that makes several key changes to existing Massachusetts’ gun laws, including banning “ghost guns.” Ghost guns are unserialized (and therefore untraceable) firearms assembled by components purchased either as a kit or as separate pieces created using 3D printing.

    On August 20, 2024, Judge Brown of the Northern District of Texas blocked the FTC's Final Rule banning noncompetes. The decision comes just over a month after Judge Brown's preliminary injunction order, which stayed the rule only as applied to the named parties. At that time, Judge Brown indicated that she would consider a broader order as part of the parties' motion for summary judgment by the end of August 2024.

    On May 23, 2024, the Department of Justice, along with 30 bipartisan state attorneys general, filed a civil antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation Entertainment and its wholly owned subsidiary, Ticketmaster, for violations of the Sherman Act as well as various state antitrust statutes. The lawsuit comes a little more than a year after Ticketmaster made headlines in the late fall of 2022 for its “Eras Tour” fiasco and the subsequent public outcry about the company and its practices.

    In our recent alert, we noted that while a Texas federal court’s decision in Ryan LLC v. FTC to preliminarily enjoin the FTC’s noncompete rule applied only to the parties in the case, there was still potential for a broader preliminary injunction to be granted in another case – ATS Tree Services LLC – being heard in the U.S. District Court for the District of Eastern Pennsylvania. That possibility has been rejected.
