The fact that Bishop Watterson High School wrestling coach Felix Catheline views the school’s first-ever state championship as a foundational piece and not a peak does not take away from the joy that was felt when the school claimed the Division II state crown on March 9. No, being aspirational just means there is a realization that the work is not finished. “Now we have to defend our crown,” Catheline said.

With 3:14 to play in the first quarter of the Bishop Watterson High School boys basketball Division III tournament game against Linden-McKinley Feb. 18, senior Dominic Theado made a basket while being fouled, giving him an even 1,000 points in his varsity career. Theado has averaged just under 20 points a game for the second consecutive season and paced his Eagles with a game-high 19 points in their 69-30 win against the Panthers. “Dom’s a great kid,” assistant coach Casey Teeters said.

If you are a baseball fan, no matter how much or how little your favorite team did in the offseason, spring training signals a time of hope for the upcoming season. Coaches Issah Ray and Tony Lehnen are fully into building the Whetstone High School wrestling program as both the boys and girls squads work toward having postseason success. The boys have two returning district qualifiers in Calder Erickson-Miyamoto (144-pound weight class) and Jasiah Mackey (heavyweight). Erickson-Miyamoto was 18-2 as of Jan. 22 and is a two-time City League champion. Mackey was 16-1 and ranked in the top 40 in the state.
