A roller derby match and a congressional meeting have more in common than one might expect. Think mayhem, smackdowns, and a lot of people going in circles. One striking difference, which is particularly apparent in Bay Area Derby (BAD) and many of its sister leagues, is their respective approaches to trans athletes. On the roller rink, trans athletes competing in women’s sports is a non-issue.

Sean Baker, director of the Academy Award-winning film Anora, used one of his acceptance speeches at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2 to encourage cinephiles to return to the movie house. “Watching a film in the theater with an audience is an experience,” exhorted Baker. But films themselves, and in some cases, their soundtracks, need to be the centrifugal force pulling people back into the aisles.

Oakland-based outfit Combo Tezeta‘s sound is electric, polyrhythmic, and not just a highly danceable blend of instrumental cumbias, chicha, and música tropical inspired by the psychedelic late ’60s and early ’70s in Peru. Sure, psychedelic cumbia is how they identify their vibe, but it’s so much more than that. These brothers are playing real instruments, and deliver a wave full of living reverb and accents that point straight at surf culture.

Playwright Itamar Moses(Tony Award winner for The Band’s Visit and Drama Desk winner for Dead Outlaw) and musician Gaby Alter grew up near one another in Berkeley, and their parents were friends. But when they were kids, their three-year age gap—Alter is older—made a big difference and they didn’t hang out much. Moses says Alter was a wonderful musician, making up comic songs about Jewish holidays and writing rock operas, and he always wanted to be part of Alter’s creative output.
