I turn back, and suddenly I have forgotten everything I have learnt in all these years, even though just for a moment. I was just sitting there extremly close to having a breakdown, feeling very humiliated. Just wanting to cry and be hidden from the eyes of others. And why? Why was it even humiliating? I couldn’t even recognise myself in the moment. Being a girl who talks so openly about how she feels, what she thinks is right and not, always making sure to stand up for the right things.

We are left standing in a space where a person once was, a void we suddenly don’t know how to fill. In that instance, we are taught to grieve, to cry, to mourn for what is lost. But I wonder where does this expectation come from?

We’ve heard it all before. A life of don’ts dictated by a society that tells women to shrink, to hide, to disappear. But the truth is that women don’t get raped because they were out after dark. Women don’t get raped because they weren’t careful enough, not because of what they were wearing. Women get raped because someone raped them. This isn’t about what women do, it’s about a society excusing the inexcusable. It’s about a society constantly neglecting until something horrifying happens.
