Despite increased vigilance and special drives, muggers continue to terrorise city streets. Recent crime data shows a rise in mugging incidents. Police officials said they record cases of mugging incidents under the Penal Code and the Speedy Trial Act. Police call these "robbery" (Dasyuta) cases. The crime database of the Police Headquarters (PHQ) shows that a total of 159 such cases were filed across the country in December last year, up from 133 in November.

A contractor secured the work to demolish a seven-storey building in the Madhubagh area of Dhaka's Moghbazar for Tk 16.5 lakh in November last year. Shortly after finalising the deal, details of the project were allegedly leaked to local gangs, including associates of notorious criminal Subrata Bain. According to the contractor, gangsters arrived at the site and demanded Tk 3 lakh to allow the work to proceed. The contractor initially paid Tk 100,000 to two gangs each to resume the work.

Gas crisis has been forcing Farzana Akter and Rabiul Islam to eat at restaurants for two weeks. The gas stove at their home near 60-Feet Road in the capital's Agargaon only works for around two hours after 4:00pm, and Farzana, a nurse at a government hospital, tries to cook within that period. For a few hours after midnight, the gas supply becomes normal, and the couple often stay awake to cook their dinner at those hours.

In Barguna, a coastal district where the risk of drowning looms large, such opportunities are rare.

Prices of onion have dipped by up to Tk 40 per kg in the capital's retail markets as the supply has surged sharply over the last two weeks. Home-grown onion sold for Tk 100 to Tk 120 per kg yesterday, down from Tk 140 to Tk 160 two weeks back. Traders at Karwan Bazar, Shyam Bazar and Mirpur said the price of onion had increased suddenly by Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kg two weeks back due to rumours of a supply shortage. However, the supply of both local and imported onion has since increased.
