After a time-consuming negotiation process and extensive consideration, Indonesia finally decided to acquire two lithium ion batteries-equipped submarines from French manufacturer Naval Group in April 2024 to strengthen the Indonesian Navy’s submarine fleet. The evolved Scorpene-class submarines will be built at PT PAL Indonesia’s shipyard in Surabaya in collaboration with Naval Group and are expected to take five to seven years to be completed once the contract becomes effective.
