    Piles of black rubbish bags continue to fill the pavements of Birmingham, as the city deals with an ongoing bin strike. Mounds of waste remain uncollected, while residents have started to take matters into their own hands. Birmingham City Council declared a major incident on 31 March, saying the "regrettable" move was taken in response to public health concerns, as picket lines were blocking depots and preventing waste vehicles from collecting rubbish.

    The mother of a teenage boy who was shot dead has urged the public to come forward with any information which could help find her son's killer eight months on. Rene Graham was just 15 years old when he was killed in Emslie Horniman's Pleasance Park, Ladbroke Grove, on 21 July 2024. He had been attending a warm-up event for the Notting Hill Carnival with friends. But the family fun day turned into tragedy when Rene was gunned down in front of hundreds of revellers.     Residents who fled after a large sinkhole opened up in a Surrey village may not be able to return to their homes for "several weeks, if not months". Carl Bussey, Surrey County Council's chair of the Strategic Coordination Group for the incident, said assessments on properties could continue but that residents would only be able to return home when buildings were "deemed structurally safe".
