WRIGLEY FIELD — There’s a new bleacher bum at Wrigley Field. A Canada goose took up residence in a planter box in deep centerfield, forcing the Cubs to block off a section of bleacher seats Saturday to keep the peace. The goose made a nest under the famed centerfield scoreboard’s right side. Its black and white head poked out over the evergreens in the concrete planter, surveying the 35,000 fans on hand.

Chicago — Fire severely damaged the historic Swift Mansion in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood, an 1892 mansion built by the founder of the meatpacking empire as a wedding gift to his daughter. The fire tore through the roof of the granite, castle-like, Richardsonian Romanesque building at 4500 S. Michigan Ave. The fire broke out Sunday morning. No was hurt in the fire, according to the Chicago Fire Department. The cause of the fire was not yet released.

Grace Ward spent four years in foster care before enrolling at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2021. On campus, 200 miles south of her hometown of Rockford, she felt alone. Before Ward entered care, she had missed three years of school and had briefly lived in homeless shelters with her mother. In her foster home, she was expected to prioritize chores over homework, babysit younger children, and call the police if a child was having a mental breakdown, she said.

AVONDALE — Public health officials linked a salmonella outbreak that sickened 20 people and sent 10 to local hospitals to an Avondale Mexican restaurant that’s now closed pending an investigation. As of Friday, 20 people were confirmed infected from the outbreak at Carniceria Guanajuato, a restaurant inside a grocery store at 3140 N. California Ave., according to the Chicago Department of Public Health. Ten of those people were hospitalized, the agency said. The restaurant voluntarily closed Sept.
