I’ve followed author Cal Newport’s career for years. He’s radical, and I like that. For most of his career, he has argued against the conventional wisdom of “follow your passion,” instead arguing that passion follows mastery in the pursuit of building a meaningful career. In his book So Good They Can’t Ignore You, he introduces the concept of “career capital,” the idea that rare and valuable skills are the currency for building fulfilling work.

I have been fortunate to have my books published for some sixteen years. Throughout my writing career I have learned that research is THE key to pulling in readers and adding authenticity to your work, even if it is fiction. If you’re doing non-fiction, research is even more paramount. With fiction, many writers believe they can write whatever comes to mind, creating strong characters, their environments, backgrounds and whatever plot they wish to follow.

Salinger gasped at the clear, bright sky. A thin line separated it from the Pacific. She pulled out the compact case from her duffle and scrutinized the fading bruise beneath layers of caked foundation. She didn’t need a mirror to see she didn’t belong here. People steered clear of her and Robin. They weren’t exactly a bed of roses. She watched her toddler on the sand with hands sprawled across small piles of shells.

Dean Koontz is and always has been an incredibly prolific writer. He’s also an excellent writer, which explains why he’s had such phenomenal success. When I heard he and I were going to get to chat exclusively for Killer Nashville Magazine, I wanted to talk to him about how one man can author over one hundred and forty books, a gazillion short stories, have sixteen movies made from his books, and sell over five hundred million copies of his books in at least thirty-eight languages.

One of my favorite quotes is from Napoleon in referring to the end of the French Revolution. Bonapart proclaimed boldly: “I am the Revolution.”As successful people, we need to become the definition of success rather than strive to fit into a definition of success. We do not need to conform to the norm, we need to create the norm, or at least our version of it. The world is made up of rules, but have you ever noticed that success tends to go to those who refuse to follow them?

I had a wonderful opportunity to just chat with bestselling author and mystery legend, Susan Isaacs, as a follow-up to my interview with her for my monthly Writer’s Digest column. It was a wonderful conversation. I needed a break from writing. She needed a break from writing. Like a fly on the wall (and with Susan’s permission), I thought I’d share the highlights of our conversation here with you. “Susan, I just finished Bad, Bad, Seymore Brown. I loved it.

Location. Location. Location. It’s true for real estate, restaurants, and even books. As a reader, I’ve lost track of the number of times that I’ve purchased a book based on the setting. Whether it was a place I’ve always wanted to visit, an area I was already familiar with, or a spot that promised a form of intrigue that I just couldn’t pass up, no other part of a book has the ability to create a picture quite as quickly and thoroughly as where it is set.

My new mystery novel, Broadcast Blues, came out on January 2. It’s the sixth book in a series published by Oceanview about a woman TV journalist in New York City who solves murders. So how did I wind up writing this series—and, even more importantly, getting it published? Well, that’s a long story. A long, long story. It began years earlier when I first got the idea for writing a book about a journalist haunted by a big story from her past with long-buried secrets that she had never revealed.
