About a week ago, almost as soon as a well-regarded high-major player hit the transfer portal, James Madison head coach Sean O’Regan had her on the phone, thinking that after building a relationship with the player while recruiting her in high school, the Dukes could have an inside track the second time around. But after a polite greeting, the player told O’Regan she’d been instructed to have all inquiries go through her agent.

Though the transfer portal opened last month with more than 2,000 players entering as of late last week, less than 400 had chosen their next destination as of Monday morning. That goes for players both leaving James Madison and potentially joining the Dukes.

Just six years after introducing a disc golf program, Eastern Mennonite is now a national power with freshman Jesse Longenecker bringing home the Royals’ first national championship last weekend in Rock Hill, S.C.The EMU disc golf team began as a student-driven organization founded by Trevor Oyer. Within a few years, the program was folded into the EMU athletic department with Oyer, now a teacher at Skyline Middle School, as head coach.
