Moy Catchment Angling Report – Week ending 22-06-2025Water levels at Ballylahan dropped slowly this week from 0.66 m on Sunday, 15th June, down to 0.23 m by noon on Sunday, 22nd June. Rainfall amounts were well below normal across the west for the week, with record air temperatures in some parts towards the weekend. Strong sunshine over several days, coupled with rising water temperatures, made angling difficult.

Michael Tiernan with a beautiful Lough Conn trout Over the weekend, Foxford Salmon Anglers held their previously postponed Presidents Cup Competition in difficult conditions. Twenty-five anglers had a return of five trout over the 13-inch competition limit. The Dublin Trout Anglers fished their LM Byrne Cup on Lough Lene recently. They were faced with pretty challenging conditions with regular downpours interrupted by the odd bit of bright sunshine. The fishing was slow enough, with only 8 of the 28 anglers boating a fish. The best fish of the day, weighing in at 4.26lb, was caught by Donal Raftery, giving him his first ever win in a DTAA competition. Full results as follows:THE UPPER BOYNE LAKES

South Shore SAC are running the Jimmy Smith and Maurice Dalton, all-Ireland Open Shore competition on 16th August on the North Beach in Wicklow Town. This is a pre-entry competition with entries closing on Wednesday 13th August 12 midnight. Check-in will be in the car park from 09.00 to 10.30. Sharp. There will be some walking involved with a high entry expected. Travel light, the walkway along the track above the beach has been restored, so it’ll be firm ground walking.

The Lurgan Coarse Angling Club fished the latest round of their Blackwater Summer League last weekend. Anglers feared that the sunshine and high temperatures might have put the fish off the feed, but they needn’t have worried, as the fish were on top form, with bream and skimmers feeding avidly. This led to some massive weights, none better than Nicky Seedon, who bagged over 45kg to take the win!. Johhney McKinley came in second with almost 34kg, and Johnny Keith took third with 20kg.

Reports of a general improvement in fishing across both lakes with wet and dry flies working such as Green Peter, Brown Sedge, Connemara Black, Bibio and Sooty Olive. Salmon are also beginning to show in Lough Conn. On Sunday 8th June, Foxford Angling Club held the recently postponed Devaney Cup Competition. Nine boats carrying eighteen anglers set out for the day.

Moy Catchment Angling Report – Week ending 08-06-2025Water levels rose considerably in the Moy early in the week following on from some heavy rain in the catchment. Levels at Ballylahan rose from 0.46 m on Sunday, 25th to 1.07 m on Tuesday, 3rd before receding back to 0.39 m by noon on Sunday, 8th June.
