Communications have ceased. That is how Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear explained the current negotiations for the Nation’s Tobacco Products Excise Tax Compact with the state of Oklahoma. Without a tobacco compact, there is no revenue sharing agreement in place, state tax liability becomes murky, and a competitive advantage could be lost to those tribes who do have compacts, to name a few detrimental factors.

The investigation is moving forward into whether Osage Nation Attorney General Clint Patterson is linked to alleged membership fraud. The allegation came to the forefront after the Congressional Membership Committee held two meetings in January to discuss the case, where it was revealed that Membership Department Director Chris Standing Bear received a tip from Osage attorney Amanda Proctor, alleging Patterson may be linked to a person fraudulently enrolled in the tribe.

Osage Casino Hotel in Pawhuska celebrated the New Year with a buffet-style complimentary dinner for Osage Elders aged 65+. All attendees were invited to bring a plus one. “Osage elders are the pillars of strength, wisdom and culture in the Osage Nation. We had a great turnout with nearly 100 elders and their guests joining us for a community meal,” said Mason Shackelford, general manager for the Osage Casino & Hotel in Pawhuska.

The Osage Nation Congress unanimously passed a resolution to extend compact negotiations for the Nation’s Tobacco Products Excise Tax Compact with the state of Oklahoma. The resolution extends negotiations until March 31. “As you know, this is a temporary extension of the terms accepted by the state in the approved compact. So, this is not an approval of a new compact.
