Tobacco compact negotiations stall between Nation and state

Communications have ceased. That is how Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear explained the current negotiations for the Nation’s Tobacco Products Excise Tax Compact with the state of Oklahoma. Without a tobacco compact, there is no revenue sharing agreement in place, state tax liability becomes murky, and a competitive advantage could be lost to those tribes who do have compacts, to name a few detrimental factors.

The investigation is moving forward into whether Osage Nation Attorney General Clint Patterson is linked to alleged membership fraud. The allegation came to the forefront after the Congressional Membership Committee held two meetings in January to discuss the case, where it was revealed that Membership Department Director Chris Standing Bear received a tip from Osage attorney Amanda Proctor, alleging Patterson may be linked to a person fraudulently enrolled in the tribe.
Osage Elders New Year's Meal a chance to 'give back'

Osage Casino Hotel in Pawhuska celebrated the New Year with a buffet-style complimentary dinner for Osage Elders aged 65+. All attendees were invited to bring a plus one. “Osage elders are the pillars of strength, wisdom and culture in the Osage Nation. We had a great turnout with nearly 100 elders and their guests joining us for a community meal,” said Mason Shackelford, general manager for the Osage Casino & Hotel in Pawhuska.

ON Congress approves extension for Tobacco Compact negotiations

The Osage Nation Congress unanimously passed a resolution to extend compact negotiations for the Nation’s Tobacco Products Excise Tax Compact with the state of Oklahoma. The resolution extends negotiations until March 31. “As you know, this is a temporary extension of the terms accepted by the state in the approved compact. So, this is not an approval of a new compact.
Counterpublic, Osage Nation celebrate historic Sugarloaf Mound transfer

In 2009, then-Osage Nation Principal Chief Jim Gray made an unpopular move. He purchased a section of Sugarloaf Mound, the last remaining mound in the city of St. Louis for $235,000. It had two houses on it, a sizable chunk was missing from one side where a road had been constructed, and the woman living in one of the houses made it clear she wasn’t selling. Some members of the First Osage Nation Congress balked at the purchase and nicknamed it “Half-a-Loaf” mound and “Sugar Daddy Loaf” mound.
Cabin of Ho-tah-moie, aka John Stink, lost to wildfire

The cabin of Ho-tah-moie (Roaring Thunderer), also famously known as John Stink, was one of the casualties of the wildfire that raged south of Pawhuska on Tuesday, Oct. 29, near the Osage County Fairgrounds. Ho-tah-moie was a famous Osage who garnered national fame in the early 1900s for being a wealthy recluse who was rumored to have come back from the dead. He was also known to always have at least five dogs with him.

These are crucial questions for anyone about to enjoy a meatpie and that’s exactly what the judges will be pondering this weekend at Hominy’s Indigenous Heritage Day and the 2nd Annual Meat Pie Contest on Saturday, Oct. 12. The day’s festivities on Hominy’s Main Street begin at 10 a.m. and last until 4 p.m. Winners of the Meat Pie Contest will be announced at 2:30 p.m., said Janeen Stuart, one of the event organizers.
