For although he is a liar, his lies are so wholly comprehensive — so totalizing — that it seems as if reality, to him, comprises only what he says is real. In this way, Trump always means what he says.

This week the leader of the free world elected to stop being free. How, then, can it lead? The United States of America has inaugurated fascism through a free vote. But the fact of its freely choosing fascism does not make America more free—it makes it typical. Almost all fascists attain power through legal means. Then they do away with the law. So yes, like Germans and Italians before them, most Americans appear to want what’s coming to them.
