Data in this report comes from Wave 153 of the American Trends Panel (ATP), Pew Research Center’s nationally representative panel of randomly selected U.S. adults. The survey was conducted from Aug. 26 to Sept. 2, 2024. A total of 9,720 panelists responded out of 10,645 who were sampled, for a survey-level response rate of 91%. The cumulative response rate accounting for nonresponse to the recruitment surveys and attrition is 3%.

日本語/ JapaneseMore than 1.2 million Japanese Americans lived in the United States as of 2022, making up about 5% of the country’s Asian American population, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. Two states are home to nearly half of Japanese Americans: California (29%) and Hawaii (16%). Japanese Americans stand out among U.S. Asians for their relatively low share of immigrants: Just 25% are immigrants, and 75% are U.S. born.

Asian Americans also have the most income inequality of any major racial or ethnic group in the United States. Without closely examining the diversity of Asian American experiences, it’s easy to miss the distinct stories of Asian Americans living with economic hardship.

The survey analysis is drawn from a national cross-sectional survey conducted for Pew Research Center by Westat. The sampling design of the survey was an address-based sampling (ABS) approach, supplemented by list samples, to reach a nationally representative group of respondents. The survey was fielded July 5, 2022, through Jan. 27, 2023.
