The need for water plant funding was a notable topic at the April 14 Galax City Council meeting, as members voted unanimously to approve plans to apply for the millions of dollars needed to improve the facility’s equipment. Monday night was the second of two public hearings needed for the city to allow the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission to apply on its behalf for a share of Community Development Block Grant funds.

Cold, wet, rainy and muddy — the weather for the Galax Recreation Center’s annual Easter egg hunt was usual for the event — whenever it’s held, it seems to attract less-than-springy weather. However, as always, the wintry atmosphere couldn’t hold back the enthusiasm of kids who made a mad dash for plastic eggs containing candies, treats and — in some cases — slips of paper redeemable for prizes they could pick out themselves at the end.

It seems a coffee a day will do anything but keep the doctors — and nurses, technicians and administrators — away, as Ignite Life Coffee Company found out at its permanent location’s ribbon cutting at Twin County Regional Hospital. “Our mission is to make healthy communities, so this is healthy coffee, obviously,” joked TCRH CEO Sudandra Ratnasamy at Ignite Life’s ribbon cutting on March 21.
