Cold, wet, rainy and muddy — the weather for the Galax Recreation Center’s annual Easter egg hunt was usual for the event — whenever it’s held, it seems to attract less-than-springy weather. However, as always, the wintry atmosphere couldn’t hold back the enthusiasm of kids who made a mad dash for plastic eggs containing candies, treats and — in some cases — slips of paper redeemable for prizes they could pick out themselves at the end.

INDEPENDENCE — The Grayson County Board of Supervisors declined to vote — yet — to send a letter of support for a $3.2 million capital improvement project to expand Independence Elementary, but asked for further details about the project at their next budget meeting. The project has two parts, consisting of a new wing with four classrooms at the elementary school as phase one, and a cafeteria and kitchen expansion as phase two.

Growing up in Galax prepared U.S. Army Col. Jeffrey McGrady to be what he calls “Mountain Strong,” as his hometown’s hard work ethic and community-centered way of life gave him a strong background to succeed in life. “It gave me strength and a good solid foundation to launch from. Tammy M. Smith, former director of the Galax Department of Social Services, has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of embezzlement from the City of Galax, according to indictments handed down by a Carroll County Circuit Court grand jury. The 13 charges of felony embezzlement were from episodes that stretched throughout her time of employment with Galax DSS, from April 2018 — shortly after she began in the position — until July 2024.

ELK CREEK —A Grayson County man is charged with malicious wounding after allegedly stabbing his roommate in the neck during an argument. On April 10, deputies responded to a reported stabbing on Hines Branch Road in Elk Creek, according to a report from the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, deputies treated a man with apparent stab wounds to the neck.

U.S. Army Col. Jeffrey McGrady has been chosen as this year’s Galax High School graduation speaker. The Class of 2025 graduation ceremony will be held on May 24 at 9 a.m. on the GHS football field. McGrady was approved by the Galax School Board at their April meeting.
