I felt an absolute zing of electricity when I opened a message a few weeks ago asking if Shannon Watts could interview ME for her Substack Live series. Along with being a longtime fan of the incredible national movement Shannon has built for common sense gun laws with Moms Demand Action, I love her Substack . It’s all about prioritizing desires (especially around activism and social change) over social expectations.

On a beautiful early spring Saturday in March, I didn’t have much planned for myself and my 5-year-old twins, so I made an impromptu decision to take them to the farmers market. I sat and drank iced coffee as they played in a kid-friendly boulder area near the market near Durham, NC’s Central Park. I decided I was just going to enjoy the sunshine and consciously not look at my phone.

We began planning events in major cities and suburban and rural communities in late January.
