Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, have already emerged as the clear winners from last night's local elections - winning dozens of councillors, at least one mayoralty, and the Runcorn and Helsby by-election, beating Labour by just six votes. Candidate Sarah Pochin won Runcorn after a recount, once again giving the party five seats in Parliament. In a previously safe Labour constituency, this is clearly a huge blow to Keir Starmer.

Standing at my front door, holding the door handle, I sighed. I moved my hand away and just stared at the door - imagining it opening on its own, bursting with sound and fury as people violently forced their way into the house.
