THE BJP IS A divided house in Uttar Pradesh. The war within the party was out in the open earlier this month, when Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, an influential OBC leader, spoke up against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. TO HIS CREDIT, Ashok Gehlot put up a spirited fight in the assembly elections a few months ago, as the Congress almost matched the BJP in vote share (39.79 per cent against 41.7 per cent) but fell behind in the number of seats won (70 against 115). BHUPESH BAGHEL’S overconfidence as Chhattisgarh chief minister was, perhaps, what resulted in his undoing in the assembly polls last year. Under his leadership, the Congress was reduced to 35 seats in the 90-member assembly, down from 68 in 2018. The result could have been different had Baghel adhered to the power-sharing arrangement made in 2018, which would have allowed party colleague T.S. Singh Deo to become chief minister in the second half of the five-year term.

Described in Jawaharlal Nehru’s Discovery of India as the heart of Hindustan, Uttar Pradesh continues to remain politically the most crucial part of the Hindi heartland. The BJP swept the state with 71 of 80 seats in 2014 (73 for its National Democratic Alliance) and 62 (64 for the NDA) in 2019. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the alliance would win all 80 seats this time. Except in Uttar Pradesh, the NDA has hit the saturation point in the heartland.

Despite his best efforts, Ashok Gehlot failed to retain power in the 2023 assembly elections in Rajasthan. Contrary to the popular belief that the former chief minister’s welfare schemes and freebies would bring rich dividends, the Congress lost badly to the BJP. The infighting in the Congress between Gehlot and his arch rival Sachin Pilot added to the party’s woes.

‘MAMA KA GHAR’―the display board outside Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s house on the VIP Link Road in Bhopal and the hundreds of people waiting outside the gate say a lot about his reputation. He might have been denied a fourth term as chief minister by the BJP central leadership, but he continues to enjoy the trust of the people of Madhya Pradesh. And the BJP is banking on Chouhan, along with a visible pro-hindutva sentiment, to repeat a sweep in the state in the Lok Sabha elections.
